Weekly Email Updates

April 21, 2018

Hello TCDS Parents and Families,

Many of you have asked about our plans for next week if TCDS teachers join the walkout on Thursday, April 26.  We sent an email earlier today that contained the information that has been distributed through teacher eplanners and on our school Facebook page.  As of this time, we plan to run a normal school day on Thursday.  We have asked teachers and support staff to let us know if they will be at school.  If we determine we will not have enough staff to run a regular school day and to ensure students are supervised and safe, we will let you know. The walkout will not impact our Early Education program(preschool and prekindergarten).  Click this link to see the full copy of the letter we drafted for parents => tinyurl.com/tcdswalkout

We let our teachers know that we recognize and respect their right to decide how they want to support the RedforEd movement, including the walkout.  We know it is a personal decision that our teachers and staff will not make lightly.  We support each person’s individual decision.

Congratulations to our Middle Students who finished their AzMERIT testingon Friday. With the exception of a few students who were absent and need to take a make-up exam, we are done!  Thank you to all students, teachers and staff for your hard work, patience, determination and encouragement to all.

Have you completed the parent survey?  If you haven’t taken it yet, please do so today.  We value your feedback.  You can take the survey here > https://tinyurl.com/tcds2018.

Please watch for an updated chart with our school expectations to come home. The chart is broken down by areas – classroom, Flag, specials, etc. – and covers expected behaviors for each under the categories of Be Responsible, Be Respectful, Be Safe. We want to finish the year with a strong focus on school culture and expectations.  Want to download the Expectations Document now?   => Click Here

Speaking about expectations, a reminder that TCDS has a no bullying policy.  This means that we intend to take quick and appropriate action if one student is bullying another.  For bullying to occur, the bully has to have some type of power over the victim, the bullying actions have to have been repeated behavior – not just a one time occurrence, and generally, the victim has told the bully to stop their bullying actions one or more times. Sometimes, students and parents use the bullying label when it does not apply. Mean behavior one or two times is rarely considered bullying.  If the students involved have an equal status at school, the actions may not be bullying. To make sure bullying and mean behavior do not occur on campus, please ask your child to let an adult know if they are feeling picked on, teased or otherwise bothered by another student.  If the classroom teacher is not able to handle the situation, students are usually sent to Mrs. St. Amand, our school guidance counselor, where they can talk about what’s going on and often work things out.  If such behavior comes to your attention and your child has not talked to an adult on campus please let their teacher know.

We are at the time of the year when parents who have applied for but have not received a space at TCDS are getting nervous and wondering if they will be given a spot to enroll.  This is the time of year when we ask any parents who have pre-registered and who, for any reason, have decided not to return to TCDS to let us know. If you have accepted a space at another school or just don’t plan to return, please let the Office staff know this week, if possible.

We held our last Leader in Me parent training this week.  Thank you to everyone who participated in the training.  If you weren’t able to participate this year, we will repeat the training a couple of times next year.

A sincere welcome to Mrs. Renee Danielson. She ran for and was elected to the TCDS School Board this week.  Your School Board looks forward to working with her.

We held our last Skate Country Night of the year this week. It was great fun for those who attended.

On to next week…

– UHS FRESHMEN ADMISSIONS TEST FOR CURRENT 7TH GRADERS (7th graders)
Freshman Admissions Application Forms have gone home this past week for students who are interested in testing for UHS – University High School.  Applications are still available online at uhs.tusd1.schooldesk.net or parents can pick one up in Mrs. St. Amand’s office. The scheduled test dates for non-TUSD 7th grade students are Saturday, May 12th at UHS (Rincon campus) from 8:00 – 11:00 or on Monday, June 25th, same location and time. Completed forms should be faxed by parents to the Accountability & Evaluation Department in TUSD or returned to Mrs. St. Amand no later than April 27th. Mrs. St. Amand will hand deliver the applications to TUSD on Monday, April 30th.

Mrs. St. Amand will also be offering “working lunch” sessions during the first two weeks of May to administer practice CogAT tests to students who (1) completed and turned in an application and (2) have an interest in a little extra preparation for the exam.  Students who practice before generally feel much more comfortable when taking the actual assessment.

– GET YOUR $500 REFERRAL CREDIT! (Parents of all grade levels, preschool to 8th)
As we’ve said before, our most effective way to bring new students to TCDS is word of mouth. Our referral credit program is still in place.  This year, we are adding an extra bonus to the referral program.

For the first family you refer who registers and stays through the first quarter of the next school year, you will receive a $500 credit that can be used for school sponsored after school programs like choir, garden club, sports, drama and more.  You can also use the credit for before and after care, summer prep and summer camp. This year’s referral bonus: You will receive a $750 referral credit for the second family you enroll and a $1,000 referral credit for the third and subsequent families.  That’s a lot of free after care, summer camp, summer prep and clubs!

Spread the word about TCDS and refer your friends and family.  It’s a win-win for you and for them!

– 5TH GRADE MOVING ON UP DAY (5th Grade Parents and families)

Activities will start at 8:45am-9:30am with a family gathering under the activity center, Students will perform a special 5th grade musical during this time. The musical will be followed by a schedule of “Making Memories” activities that will take place until 12:00pm. Parents are invited to have lunch with their child from 12:10-1:00pm and then join the classroom from 1:00-1:45pm, where teachers will distribute individual awards.
