Ms. Nicole’s prekindergarten Dragonflies have teamed with Ms. Laurie’s second grade Owls this year as reading Buddies – and the groups gathered recently for one more reading session before summer.
The kids read to each other and talked about their favorite parts of having a reading buddy.
The two classes met every Wednesday afternoon during the school year. In addition to reading many fun books, they worked on several projects together and had a lot of fun!
Way to synergize, kids! Keep up the great reading over the summer!
Prekindergarten students are synergizing with their second grade Reading Buddies to design and build bridges.
Ms. Amber’s Elephant class has been learning about different types of bridges as part of their S.T.E.M. unit. The students researched how bridges are able to hold so much weight, if different shaped-bridges are stronger and why bridges are used.
Ms. Adrienne’s second grade class (Reading Buddies with the Elephants) have been learning about inventors. When the two classes joined together recently, the older students helped teach the younger students important facts about bridges.
Together, the Reading Buddies paired up to design and build bridges using only toothpicks and gumdrop candies. Take a look at the process – and the great teamwork – involved to make these amazing bridges! Excellent work, students!
Ms. Amber says that building the bridges also serves as an introduction to the prekindergarten class’s 3D Shapes Module in Engage NY Math.
Mrs. Rodriguez’s second grade students kicked off Reading Buddies today!
The class is teaming up with Ms. Shannon’s, Ms. Jordan’s, Ms. Paige’s, and Ms. Jean’s preschool students to spend one-on-one and small group time reading with the younger kids. The students will join each other every Wednesday to establish relationships and work on their reading – and listening – skills while learning about one another and finding out some great information on interesting books.
Mrs. Rodriguez says, “The kids were so excited!”
Reading Buddies – classes teaming up with other classes of a different grade level to read and share about books with one another. This literacy program is also proving to be a great way to make new friends.
Second grade teacher Mrs. Rodriguez teams up with fifth grade teacher Ms. Annie for successful and educational weekly Reading Buddies sessions. In the photos below, the students share what they have been doing in Daily 5, reading to each other and sharing their interactive notebooks.
Reading Buddies is more than just reading with students in different grade levels. It’s also about creating friendships and appreciation for one another.
