______________________________________________________

Dear Parents,

We are excited to roll out our calendar for the 2011-2012 school year. I’d like to take the opportunity to point out some features and highlights of the calendar:

- The 180-day school year will begin on Thursday, August 11th, 2011 and end Friday, May 25th, 2012. The start date differs from the one indicated on our current calendar, for reasons that are discussed below.

- In addition to regular holidays, 4 additional “no school” days have been added to the calendar: September 16th, October 14th, February 10th, and May 4th. These days will be used for professional development of our teachers.

- One additional vacation day will be added Monday, January 2nd, consistent with other schools in our area.

- Half-days are reduced in number from 8 in the current calendar to 4 in the new calendar: October 19th and 20th for teacher-parent-student conferences, March 9th for a teacher grading day, and May 25th, the last day of school.

- Given the changes described above and in order to meet our 180 school day obligation, two addition school days were needed. We decided on the beginning of the school year rather than after Memorial Day in May; hence the start date of Thursday, August 11th. We regret making a change to our anticipated start date, however after extensive discussion with our faculty, we believe the benefits of the new calendar are compelling and warrant the change. The changes have just been given final approval today.

- The first two days of school, August 11th and 12th will be shortened days, with dismissal at 1:30 for grades 4-8 and 2:00 for grades K-3. Also, these days are designated as non-academic days in which we get to know one another, build culture and community, reinforce our expectations for manners and respect, and work on anti-bullying activities together. We believe these first days of school will be helpful to all of us in meeting our goal of social excellence and establishing a great climate for the school year.

If you have any questions about the calendar, please feel free to contact me.

Best Regards,

Mark Saliba, Ed.D.
Principal
